Pension program is the largest of VA’s three current pension programs. We focus on the Improved Pension program in this report. Since it was established, it is also the only pension program that has remained open to new claimants. In fiscal year , the Improved Pension program represented over 90 percent of the $ billion in pension. The VA provides a non-service-connected pension (click here for the payment rate tables) for wartime veterans with low incomes and who are over 64 years old, or to wartime veterans who are totally and permanently disabled for reasons not related to their military service. The pension is intended to provide a guaranteed minimum income for veterans who qualify.

VA's pension program provides monthly benefit payments to certain wartime Veterans with financial need, and their survivors. As Veterans and survivors consider applying for these benefits, VA would like to share important information about the pension program and organizations offering assistance with pension applications.
Pension beneficiaries, who were receiving a VA pension on Dec. 31,and do not wish to elect the Improved Pension, will continue to receive the pension rate received on that date.
